Darmstadt is a city of about 150,000 people in Hesse in central Germany. It was once the capital of the Grand Duchy of Hesse and has always been prosperous. Its modern wealth comes largely from industry: originally chemicals and pharmaceuticals, then more recently, electronics. If you're visiting Darmstadt, you'll find it easy to get around with Enterprise Rent-A-Car's great online deals. Among the city's major attractions is the huge Ducal Palace, which stands beside the market square. A short drive up the hill overlooking Darmstadt takes you to Frankenstein Castle, which may have provided the inspiration for Mary Shelley's novel; it's open well into the evening and admission is free. A strong Art Nouveau influence has given Darmstadt a number of intriguing modern buildings, including Mathildenhöhe, the site of a major artistic movement around 1900. The Herrngarten park, laid out in the English style, was once owned by royalty and is a pleasant place to stroll. The local branch of Enterprise on Otto-Röhm-Straße is next to the Citybike store, just off the junction of routes 3 and 42.
