Leipzig — alive and kicking!

The creative mix of bohemian, bourgeois and revolutionary sentiment heralded the end of the GDR 30 years ago and has left its mark on Leipzig. Goethe called the city "Little Paris" and in GDR times it was a window to the West thanks to large trade fairs. Like Berlin, Leipzig is creative, lively and rich in culture. Only cheaper. All this makes the Saxon metropolis one of the most exciting travel destinations in Germany.

Park your rental car in one of the car parks and set off for Leipzig's compact city centre with its unique network of historic arcades found nowhere else in Europe, such as the Mädlerpassage with 'Auerbach's Cellar', a much-quoted location in Goethe's 'Faust'.

The 854-year-old Nikolaikirche is also a must-see, not only because of its photogenic pastel-coloured interior, but also because it was the source of the power that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 — the Monday demonstrations started from here.

If the countryside is more your thing, the Schönborn-Dreiwerden ore railway/mountain railroad will allow you to explore an old silver mine and you can reach this within an hour via the A72 or A14 motorways. For untouched nature, add a hike along the Zschopau.

Just as quickly, you can drive to Kriebstein Castle, which dates back to the 14th century. It is also known as the "most beautiful knight's castle in Saxony". You can experience this historical splendour at knights' games or in the castle museum.

Driving in Leipzig

Leipzig and the metropolitan region have an excellent, modern transportation network.

You can reach Messe Leipzig directly via the A14, A9 or A38. Leipzig/Halle Airport is only 9 miles away.
